Ian Clarke Ian received his osteopathic diploma in 1984, and was received into the Register of the General Osteopathic Council, on January 11th 2000. He was trained as a Naturopath as well as an Osteopath and as such, his clinical approach is informed by the principles of Nature Cure, integrating diet, lifestyle and ergonomics to assist the return towards a state of health. He has practiced in a number of clinics in the UK and is able to use a wide range of treatments and techniques.
He employs soft tissue massage, muscle energy technique and neuro-muscular techniques but he is particularly interested in Strain-Counter strain, a form of osteopathic treatment developed by the American osteopath Lawrence Jones. This approach involves the identification of tender points (usually representing the origins or insertions of muscles), which have become strained either through sudden trauma involving accidents, falls, injuries or repetitive strain). During treatment the affected limb or body part is supported and monitored in a position which, over a period of 1-2 minutes, the affected muscle is allowed to relax. This type of treatment involves the active collaborations of the person being treated, both in identifying the tender points and also ensuring that the positions in which he is supporting them are comfortable and pain free. While this clinical approach necessitates a longer treatment time (average time is 45 minutes) it enables Ian to treat the young (whose bones are still developing) and older people whose bone density may have been compromised by Osteoporosis or prolonged use of medication, such as steroids.
On a personal note, Ian was born in the UK and was educated in South America, Durham and Edinburgh. He enjoys country walking, gardening, reading, cooking and music.
